Building permits. Two little words that mean so much.

Some call it intimidating, some say they aren’t needed. The reality is, building permits ensure that the Ontario Building Code and local by-laws are complied with during the construction phase. They ensure that the municipality has a record of the work carried out and avoid costly delays during building sales. Not to mention they are an extra layer of protection to the owner against non-complying work that would (dare I say) need to be re-done.

Local municipalities have their own list of items that are required during permit submission. Always verify with your local building permit office to see what supporting documents are required for your specific scope of work. Alternatively, scroll to the ‘’Let us help you!’’ section below.

Architectural and mechanical drawings, engineer seals, septic reports, site plans, truss layouts, MTO clearance letters, etc. are all possible items required for permit submission

Not sure if a permit is need?

Ask yourself some of the following questions:

  • Am I changing structural elements?
  • Will the existing floor layout be changing?
  • Is the plumbing and/or heating being relocated?
  • Am I proposing to build a new structure bigger than 10’ x 10’?
  • Do I want an addition to my home?
  • Is the existing use of the building being changed (ex; running a bakery business out of your home?)

If you have answered yes to any of the questions above, it looks as though a building permit is required.
